#Burrill raises $125M to invest in #Brazil life sciences

Burrill & Co. has recently announced the completion of its $125M Burrill Brazil Fund I, which will invest in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals in Brazil.

Burrill has also received approval to begin investment from the necessary Brazilian authorities, meaning it can begin awarding investments in the coming weeks. According to Burrill's website, the fund will invest primarily "in life sciences companies, including biopharmaceutical, pharmaceutical, medical devices, diagnostic, health & wellness, health care services and delivery, agricultural biotechnology, industrial biotechnology, renewable chemicals and renewable biofuel companies".

Brazil has not seen very much venture capital activity in recent years for the biopharmaceutical industry, with government organizations or academic institutions providing a majority of funds to early-stage companies. Burril & Co. has already been a leader in the burgeoning VC market in Brazil, and with the closing of this fund they move one step closer to providing much-needed finacial suport for local innovation in Latin America.
