Vaccine for Obesity and Weight Loss

Ladies (and gentlemen), have you ever thought how great it would be if one would never get fat? The topic of weight loss is close to heart to many. Thank goodness for us, the team of researchers from Braasch Biotech and Jackson Laboratory has attempted a new obesity vaccine approach in search for a safe and effective obesity treatment. To add icing to the cake, the preclinical mouse study has proved to be promising, and it was reported that the mice experienced 10% weight loss in just 4 days!

It turns out that the somatostatin has an inhibitory effect on the action of the insulin growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), both of which are known to increase metabolism and drive weight loss. The vaccines generated antibodies against the somatostatin, and help lift the inhibitory effect of the growth hormone and isulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), thereby leading to weight loss. The mice were able to maintain the 10% weight loss without any unhealthy fluctuation in IGF-1 and insulin.

Of course, it is still too early to tell if these new metabolism vaccines could pass through the regulators’ stringent guidelines. Nevertheless, let this positive news be a motivation for us all in the Drug Discovery field that we have the potential to help so many people.
