Top 50 Pharmaceutical Companies by R&D Investment Worldwide in 2011

The ‘2012 EU Industrial R&D Scoreboard' highlighted the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology industry as being the top research and development (R&D) investing sector worldwide. The Scoreboard ranked the world's top 1500 companies from all industry sectors by their investments in R&D, and I filtered through the list for all companies listed as ‘pharmaceuticals and biotechnology industry' to see how they rank. Here are the top 50 from 2011, according to the Scoreboard:

Company name – World Ranking (all industries) – R&D investment (million euros)

1. Novartis - World rank 4 – 7001 million euros (Novartis' Signifor was one of the best selling orphan-drugs approved and launched during 2012)

2. PfizerWorld rank 6 – 6805 million euros (Pfizer and Amgen's Enbrel was one of the best selling biologics of 2012, although  the EMA's rejection of RhA drug Xeljanz made my list of top 5 most surprising pharma regulatory agency rejections)

3. RocheWorld rank 7 – 6782 million euros (Roche and Isis recently announced an alliance to develop treatments for Huntington's disease)

4. Merck USWorld rank 10 – 6090 million euros (Merck and Pfizer recently announced their joining of forces to develop a new SGLT2 inhibitor for type 2 diabetes)

5. Johnson and JohnsonWorld rank 11 - 5833 million euros (J&J's Invokana is one of a new breed of 5 up-and-coming diabetes treatments)

6. Sanofi-AventisWorld rank 16 - 4795 million euros

7. GlaxoSmithKlineWorld rank 17 – 4377 million euros

8. Eli LillyWorld rank 27 – 3880 million euros

9. AstraZeneca - World rank 28 – 3668 million euros

    I am not very surprised, especially about the top five. They have been leaders in the biotech industry for years and continue to exceed everyone else when it comes to fast and accurate R&D.
